This was stated by Rawalpindi DPO Saud Aziz while talking to newsmen. He said: "The men were wanted for the sectarian murder in January of prominent Shiite leader, Agha Ziauddin, in Gilgit."
It may be recalled that the killing of Shiite leader Agha Ziauddin had spakred sectarian clashes in Gilgit, Baltistan resulting in killing of 17 people and put Gilgit under curfew for months.
The DPO said the suspects were plotting to attack a Shiite event last week "but their plan failed because of tight security."
Aziz identified the suspects as Shah Raees, Ijaz Wali, Aurangzeb, and Amir Abbasi. Three are from Gilgit and one is from Islamabad, Aziz said, adding that police also recovered Rs 160,000 from Aurangzeb.
The Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, a hardcore Sunni militant organisation, is being accused of killing hundreds of Shiite Muslims since its emergence in the early 1990s.
